A Hunger Artist - Book Jacket & Short Story
This project was focused on the book jacket aspect. The theme of the short story, A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka, is heavy on the vicious cycle of self-sabotaging, self-isolation and death. I chose to draw a skeletal Ouroboros on the cover, a dead symbol of eternally repeating cycles, it eats itself; regenerates but continues eating itself and cannot stop, a good correlation to the theme. The title and author are handwritten for a more frenzied font, I used Helvetica for the blurb, author bio, and quotes. The typesetting for the interior is Bodoni 72 Oldstyle font at 11pt, leading at 16pts and tracking at 20pts, justified to the left.
