Conceptual art that encapsulates the themes of the short story, Light is like Water by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story follows two boys who’re gifted a row boat than flood their apartment with light by shattering the bulbs, so they can sail on the light like water. As it is a magical realism short-story, I wanted to draw a realistic lightbulb, but filled with illuminated liquid.
A film poster I made, using the classic film Swing Time. I used handmade textures, handwritten typography, and traditional art combined in Photoshop, using digital colors and editing. It was supposed to demonstrate how we can make make captivating art with only a few simple elements.
Taking some design, and typographic inspirations from 1930’s and 1960’s film posters, I reimagined a contemporary poster of 1931’s Dracula. This particular one was my final.

The theme for this assignment is a “character entering a surreal environment.” I used handmade collage techniques for this assignment, the collage elements were modified in a way so that the original source of the material is mysterious, and acts as texture/color/shape as opposed to imagery. I included at least two separate collage elements, two different fabrics. Using this collage as a reference, I recreated the image using only digital techniques, and masking textures on Photoshop.

In this assignment, for my reference and themes, I had to use the New Yorker article, “The hunt for a Lost Bat”. It is about a group of biologists finding a previously thought to be extinct species of bat, the Hills Horseshoe bat who many residents thought was a made up animal, as all evidence of them living had disappeared years ago. I expanded on the concepts of composition and digital / hand made techniques, while having to introduce the idea of conceptual and metaphorical thinking for a unique and contemporary final; fitting for the article. I liked the idea of grouping the bat, thought to be unreal, with some of the other famous Cryptids, caught on camera.
The Illustration Portfolio Project was a culmination of multiple stages of work for each week— I chose to do tarot cards, a popular illustrative project for artists. My theme was 1940’s and 50’s Film Noir. I finished a total of five cards, and I used some scenic shots from popular Noir films, such as “The Third Man” by Carol Reed and “Double Indemnity” by Billy Wilder for inspiration. I’ve hope to complete more cards for a full set soon.
